Year 6 2018 - 2019

"The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step" Lau Tzu.

Welcome to Year 6.

Miss Hickson, Mrs Walker and Mrs Gray are your teachers in Year 6.

We welcome you to your final year at Bunbury Aldersey Primary School. Whilst we have fun and enjoy our learning, we will also expect you to work hard and try your best. We expect high standards of work and presentation but are always available should you need to ask about anything.

New York and the United States of America

“I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character.”

This term, in Year 6, we will be learning about New York specifically whilst also looking at American life, culture and history. This will form part of the whole school topic of ‘Ten Texts’ where each class chooses ten books which are linked to their topic.

In English, we will start by using the book ‘The Man Who Walked between the Towers’ to write in different genres. We will be focussing on writing a biography, a newspaper article, a non-fiction text and a narrative. Amongst other key texts, we will also look at the book ‘The Arrival’ which shows the story of immigration.

In our Maths lessons we will start with looking at fractions, decimals and percentages before moving on to measurement and ratio and proportion.

Also, we will be investigating numerous themes throughout our topic from the Civil Rights Movement to Crime and Punishment to Immigration. Additionally, we will look at the Geography of America and in Science we will cover the topic of electricity.

We will also be looking at specific Rights of the Child which link to our topic:

Article 30: Every child has the right to learn and use the language, customs and religion of their family, whether or not these are shared by the majority of the people in the country where they live.

Article 2: The rights apply to every child without discrimination.

Article 37: Children must not be tortured, sentences to the death penalty or suffer other cruel or degrading treatment or punishment.

Article 22: If a child is seeking refuge or has refugee status, governments must provide them with appropriate protection and assistance to help them enjoy all the rights in the Convention.

We ask that you always have your PE kit in school as our timetabled days may change.

We are all looking forward to enjoying your last year as a primary school pupil with you!
