Y4 week beginning 21.9.15

Date: 18th Sep 2015 @ 10:06am

Hi

We hope that you have enjoyed your second full week in Y4, we certainly have. You have all learned what a noun phrase is and how to extend them by adding more description or information. You completed your Mayan creation stories which were great and you entered the circus tent (our changed classroom) and used all your senses to experience what was going on. Popcorn, music, acrobats, firebreathers and jugglers were just some of the things you witnessed.

Over the next 2 weeks we will be learning x and division facts for the 6x and 9x table as well as recapping on the 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x and 10x. It is very important that you learn your x tables as it makes your maths so much easier for you. We will identify patterns in these tables and then move onto x multiples of 10 by a single digit number eg 3x4=12 so 30x4=120. We will recap on partitioning our x eg 34x4= 30x4 +4x4= 120+16=136 mentally with a few jottings or using the grid method. Finally we will look at finding fractions of amounts eg 1/4 of 16.

We will be continuing with Leon and the Place Between in literacy looking at the front cover in great detail as to what we can see. What magic is going to begin? We will use this information to write a paragraph of what might happen as we enter the book and then use our extended noun phrases to write a poem.

A lot of you requested to find out what the Mayans ate and then use this information to cook it. On Tuesday we will research their farming methods, what they grew and hunted and then what they cooked. Later on in this term we will use this information to cook a Mayan recipe in small groups.

You will be conducting a science experiment to see the melting points of some materials. This is very exciting but we need to be careful and listen to instructions as you will be using candles to do this. There will be 3 adults in the classroom and half the class will do this in small groups at a time.

Finally we will continue with our Mayan head dresses in art. Mr. Cole showed you some examples and you have all made a really good start in your pairs to make your own unique mask and head dress. Well done

Please don't forget we are holding a Macmillan Coffee and cake day on Friday 25th. Please bring in some money to buy a cake or even donate a cake you or your family have made to this very worthwhile cause. Your parents and the local community have been invited to drop in for a cup of coffee/tea and a piece of cake.

Have a great weekend.

Love Mrs. W and Mrs. S
