Y2 News & Information 9.10.17

Date: 8th Oct 2017 @ 12:52pm

Week Beginning 9nd October 2017

I hope you all enjoyed the Harvest Service on Friday. The power point at the end I found particularly moving. How wonderful all the pictures of Peter and the Wolf painted by Y2 were!

This week we will be continuing with our Moscow/Russia work. We will also be completing our design for the fundraising Christmas card. An email we come home separately about this. I love these cards and have a whole drawer full of the ones the children have sent me over the years.

In English we are continuing using Peter and The Wolf for our work. We are continuing to learn about using different kinds of sentences in writing. This week we continue looking at commands and then using them in instruction writing.

n Mathematics the focus for the next few weeks is Place Value. In Y2 children are expected to

  • count in steps of 2, 3, and 5 from 0, and in tens from any number, forward and backward
  • recognise the place value of each digit in a two-digit number (tens, ones)
  • identify, represent and estimate numbers using different representations, including the number line
  • compare and order numbers from 0 up to 100; use <, > and = signs
  • read and write numbers to at least 100 in numerals and in words
  • use place value and number facts to solve problems.

This week’s main focus continues to be is ordering numbers and representing numbers on a number line.

As we had Harvest Service to prepare for last week we had to delay our model making in our theme/topic work. So this week it will be full steam ahead with our models of St Basil’s Cathedral.

Our handwriting focus is on the following letters – ascender letters or letters with tails – f g y j p qu

In phonics/spelling the focus is Long Vowel Homophones, using a GPC (grapheme phoneme correspondence) chart and other strategies for learning tricky words. Focus sounds this week oi/oy.

In RE our unit of work is called Good News. The key questions of the unit are - How does the bible show Jesus living his life as good news to people? How do you know when you feel better? On the outside? On the inside.

Our PE days are Monday am (Ms Charlesworth) and Wednesday am (Sports’ Coaches)

Reading Books
The children are welcome to change their reading book as often as they like but I would ask that you sign the reading record book when they have completed a book.

Homework – I have posted the Takeaway homework on the class webpage. I also put a paper copy home this week in the children’s homework book. For mathematics homework please use Mathletics. If you haven’t access to a computer at home let me know and I will arrange some extra lunchtime sessions for your child. We try to use Mathletics at school too in class at least once a week.
Please send homework books in on a Monday. I will try to mark the spellings and return the books with new spelling homework on a Tuesday.
