Date: 26th Feb 2017 @ 4:10pm

Week Beginning 27th February 2017

I hope you all had a lovely half term and weren’t blown away by the gusts of wind.

In English this week we are starting work linked to our whole school text ‘Sea Of Dreams’. Here is the information about this project sent out by Mrs Badger before the holiday.

Dear Parents and Carers,

Sea of Dreams English Project

After half term we will be undertaking a Sea of Dreams multi sensory experience across the school. At the end of the project we will be hosting an exhibition to showcase the written and creative work for the children at our school. The project will be based on the text ‘Sea of Dreams’ by Dennis Nolan.

We will be following the theme for our World Book Day on Friday 3rd March. To link with the ‘Sea of Dreams’ theme we are asking children to dress as a sea themed character eg sailor, pirate, mermaid, fish etc Led by our talented and inspirational staff, the children will work in a variety of mediums and written genres over the half term period. We would also like to engage members of the community in our project, if you are able to offer any support we would greatly appreciate it. This might be in the form of a talk with the children regarding a sea based activity or interest you may have, art/craft interests which could be incorporated – willow weaving etc.

As part of our exhibition we would like to use sea themed artefacts. If you have anything that may be suitable please email school. We are looking in particular for a wooden dingy if anyone could spare one for a few weeks?

Thank you for your continued support

Mrs Badger

In Mathematics our focus for this half term will be Geometry – properties of shapes. At Y2 children are taught to

  • identify and describe the properties of 2-D shapes, including the number of sides and line symmetry in a vertical line
  • identify and describe the properties of 3-D shapes, including the number of edges, vertices and faces
  • identify 2-D shapes on the surface of 3-D shapes, [for example, a circle on a cylinder and a triangle on a pyramid]
  • compare and sort common 2-D and 3-D shapes and everyday objects.

We will also be reinforcing addition, subtraction, multiplication and division skills.

We will continue with work on the theme “What Wonderful World” looking at the world from a geographical perspective and finding out about different kinds of homes. This will link in with the Sea of Dreams through work on oceans. In Science we are looking at Living Things and Different Habitats again linking this to Sea of Dreams work.

In phonics/spelling the focus is on the possessive apostrophe (singular) .We continue in all lessons to develop and reinforce the use of different spelling strategies.

Our handwriting focus is on the following letters – the c group c o a d g s q

In RE this week we will finish work on the Christian Concept: Kingdom of God with the theme of Jesus’ Teaching. After that for the rest of the term we will look at Forgiveness – How does prayer help Christian start again?, Salvation – What do Christians believed about salvation (being rescued/found)? and Resurrection – Why is the resurrection story important for Christians?

Our PE days are Monday (first lesson) and Wednesday (last lesson).

Reading Books
The children are welcome to change their reading book as often as they like but I would ask that you sign the reading record book when they have read to you or to themselves at home.
We have a reading session every day where the children take part in a variety of reading activities one of which includes Guided Reading with me. Here we focus on using the skills needed to decode words as well as developing comprehension skills.
