Y2 News & Information 25.9.17

Date: 24th Sep 2017 @ 4:39pm

Week Beginning 25th September 2017

Thank you to everyone who came to the Meet The Teacher meeting last Thursday. If you weren’t able to come all the documents discussed and the presentation are available on the Y2 website. There are also lots of other documents here you may find useful in supporting your child’s education.

Congratulations to Charlie in Y2 and his family on the birth of Georgina. It was lovely to see the baby on Friday.

In English we are continuing using Peter and The Wolf for our work. We have already read the story and listened to the music. We are focusing our work on writing different kinds of sentences and using noun phrases.

In Mathematics the focus for the next few weeks is Place Value. In Y2 children are expected to

  • count in steps of 2, 3, and 5 from 0, and in tens from any number, forward and backward
  • recognise the place value of each digit in a two-digit number (tens, ones)
  • identify, represent and estimate numbers using different representations, including the number line
  • compare and order numbers from 0 up to 100; use <, > and = signs
  • read and write numbers to at least 100 in numerals and in words
  • use place value and number facts to solve problems.

In our theme/topic work we are continuing to investigate ‘Where is Russia?’ Artwork using the architecture of St Basil’s Cathedral in Red Square as inspiration for our drawings and painting is well underway.

Our handwriting focus is on the following letters – l group of letters l t I u y j

In phonics/spelling the focus is Long Vowel ‘a’ Homophones, using a GPC (grapheme phoneme correspondence) chart and other strategies for learning tricky words.

In RE our unit of work is called Good News. The key questions of the unit are - How does the bible show Jesus living his life as good news to people? How do you know when you feel better? On the outside? On the inside.

Our PE days are Monday am (Ms Charlesworth) and Wednesday am (Sports’ Coaches)

Reading Books
The children are welcome to change their reading book as often as they like but I would ask that you sign the reading record book when they have completed a book.
