Week Beginning 18th September 2017

I can’t quite believe we are already starting our third week of the half term. What varied weather we seem to be having! The trees round and about where I live in Nantwich are already starting to change colour. Everyone has settled into the routine of Y2 very well. We welcomed Mia Anderson into our class at the start of term. Congratulations also go to Nathan and his family on the birth of Ffion.

Each week I will try and post an outline of some of the things we are learning about. Sometimes these change in the week as our interests develop. As you know our city focus is Moscow but we are also look at Russia as a country.

In English we are using Peter and The Wolf for our work. We have already read the story. We are listening to the music and learning about the instruments of the orchestra.

In Mathematics the focus for the next few weeks is Place Value. In Y2 children are expected to

  • count in steps of 2, 3, and 5 from 0, and in tens from any number, forward and backward
  • recognise the place value of each digit in a two-digit number (tens, ones)
  • identify, represent and estimate numbers using different representations, including the number line
  • compare and order numbers from 0 up to 100; use <, > and = signs
  • read and write numbers to at least 100 in numerals and in words
  • use place value and number facts to solve problems.

In our theme/topic work we have started to investigate ‘Where is Russia?’ and we have started some artwork using the architecture of St Basil’s Cathedral in Red Square as inspiration for our drawings and painting.

Our handwriting focus is on the following letters – r group of letters r n m h k p b

In phonics/spelling the focus is Homophones, using a GPC (grapheme phoneme correspondence) chart and other strategies for learning tricky words.

In RE our unit of work is called Good News. The key questions of the unit are - How does the bible show Jesus living his life as good news to people? How do you know when you feel better? On the outside? On the inside.

Our PE days are Monday am (Ms Charlesworth) and Wednesday am (Sports Coaches)

Reading Books
The children are welcome to change their reading book as often as they like but I would ask that you sign the reading record book when they have completed a book.
