Y2 News & Information 16.10.17

Date: 15th Oct 2017 @ 4:49pm

Week Beginning 16th October 2017

Please support the Christmas Card fundraising initiative. The children put an enormous effort into their Christmas card pictures last week. The cards always look beautiful when they are printed and are of an excellent quality,

In English we are writing an ‘How To Catch A Wolf’ guide, focusing on command, instruction sentences. We are also writing facts sentences in our topic books. We will start some non fiction report writing on wolves.

n Mathematics the focus for the next few weeks is Place Value. In Y2 children are expected to

  • count in steps of 2, 3, and 5 from 0, and in tens from any number, forward and backward
  • recognise the place value of each digit in a two-digit number (tens, ones)
  • identify, represent and estimate numbers using different representations, including the number line
  • compare and order numbers from 0 up to 100; use <, > and = signs
  • read and write numbers to at least 100 in numerals and in words
  • use place value and number facts to solve problems.

This week’s main focus is using a part part whole model.

As we had our fundraising Christmas cards to complete this week we will finish our model making in our theme/topic work this week.

Our handwriting focus is on the following letters – letters that join from the top o v w and a group of letters called others e x z

In phonics/spelling the focus is Long Vowel Homophones, using a GPC (grapheme phoneme correspondence) chart and other strategies for learning tricky words. Focus sounds this week I as in kind, mind. Revision of ar/or.

In RE our unit of work is called Good News. The key questions of the unit are - How does the bible show Jesus living his life as good news to people? How do you know when you feel better? On the outside? On the inside.

Our PE days are Monday am (Ms Charlesworth) and Wednesday am (Sports’ Coaches)

Reading Books
The children are welcome to change their reading book as often as they like but I would ask that you sign the reading record book when they have completed a book.

Homework – I have posted the Takeaway homework on the class webpage. I also put a paper copy home this week in the children’s homework book. For mathematics homework please use Mathletics. If you haven’t access to a computer at home let me know and I will arrange some extra lunchtime sessions for your child. We try to use Mathletics at school too in class at least once a week.
Please send homework books in on a Monday. I will try to mark the spellings and return the books with new spelling homework on a Tuesday.
