Y2 News 8th May 2018

Date: 7th May 2018 @ 2:50pm

Week Beginning 8th May 2018

What an amazing weather over the bank holiday weekend! I hope you all enjoyed the sunshine. I am writing this just before I go off to a barbeque with some friends.

In English we are continuing with work on our text What Made Tiddalik Laugh, a dreamtime story from Australia. We will be writing out some of our character descriptions for our display work. We will also be planning to write our own version changing some aspects of the story.

As Mathematicians we are working on Geometry – Properties of Shapes. At Y2 pupils are expected to

  • identify and describe the properties of 2-D shapes, including the number of sides and line symmetry in a vertical line
  • identify and describe the properties of 3-D shapes, including the number of edges, vertices and faces
  • identify 2-D shapes on the surface of 3-D shapes, [for example, a circle on a cylinder and a triangle on a pyramid]
  • compare and sort common 2-D and 3-D shapes and everyday objects.

As Scientists we will start to investigate and experiment with water.

As Geographers we will be locating and unedifying the world oceans and continents with specific reference to Australasia to link with the Tiddalik story

Our handwriting focus for the term is as follows:

  • Week 4 7th May – tall letters d h b l k t
  • Week 5 14th May - letters with tails f g y I p qu
  • Week 6 21st May- letters that join at the top/others o v w e x z

In phonics/spelling we have a weekly focus either on a particular sound or spelling rule. We also continue to reinforce Long Vowel words, learn how to use a GPC and spell common exception words.

  • Week 4 7th May - Suffixes ment/ness
  • Week 5 4th May - sound spelt ‘or’ after W & possessive apostrophes
  • Week 6 21st May - al at the end of words and revision of this half term’s work.

In RE our units of work are based around the Christian Concepts: Discipleship, Holy Spirit and Creation.
The key questions are:

  • Discipleship - Why do Christians make promises at baptism?
  • Holy Spirit - What do Christian symbols teach about the Holy Spirit?
  • Creation - Why do Christians look after their local environment? Why do Christians say thank you at harvest time?

Reading
The children are welcome to change their reading book as often as they like but I would ask that you sign the reading record book when they have completed a book at home with you.

Miss Porter and I will as usual continue to assess all the children’s reading again using our benchmarking system. Please bear with us as it does take time but is a thorough assessment of the level the children are reading at.

We have a reading session every day in Y2. The children rotate around different activities provided to support and develop their skills. This includes reading comprehension work both independently and with Miss Porter or myself. It also includes Ipad and computer activities linking with spelling, reading and SPaG. This is alongside 1-1 reading where needed with us.

PE
Our PE days are now Monday pm and Friday am. Mr. Dooley, our PE specialist teacher, will teach both these sessions.
