Week Beginning  5thNovember 2018

I hope you all had a great half term break. This week and next week we will be focusing on Remembrance throughout our work. We are joining with Reception and Year 1 some afternoons for some shared project work. Don’t forget the exhibition of all our work is on Friday 30thNovember. This Friday the British Legion will join us for our school worship. Please join us at 10.00am.

InEnglishwe are continuing to use Walter Tull’s Scrapbook as part of our We Will Remember project. We will be looking at the period of the First World War.

InMathematicswe are still focusing on Subtraction. In Y2 children are expected to

  • solve problems with addition and subtraction:
    • using concrete objects and pictorial representations, including those involving numbers, quantities and measures
    • applying their increasing knowledge of mental and written methods
  • recall and use addition and subtraction facts to 20 fluently, and derive and use related facts up to 100
  • add and subtract numbers using concrete objects, pictorial representations, and mentally, including:
    • two-digit number and ones
    • two-digit number and tens
    • two two-digit numbers
    • adding three one-digit numbers
  • show that addition of two numbers can be done in any order (commutative) and subtraction of one number from another cannot
  • recognise and use the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction and use this to check calculations and solve missing number problems.

As part of our daily maths fluency sessions we learn times tables. We love using Numberjacks Times Tables Songs

This week our focus is on the 2x 5x and 10 x tables.

Here is song for the ten times table recommended by Y3

Ourhandwritingfocus is on the following letters – the tall group of letters.

Inphonics/spellingthe focus is Homophones, using a GPC (grapheme phoneme correspondence) chart and other strategies for learning tricky words. We are also revising the long vowel phonemes ‘or’ and learning the different graphemes that can be used to make this sound.

In REour unit of work is called Good News. The key questions of the unit are - How does the bible show Jesus living his life as good news to people? How do you know when you feel better? On the outside? On the inside.

Y2 PEdays are Thursday and Friday mornings with Mr Dooley.

Y2 Reading Books
Y2 are welcome to change their reading book daily but I would ask that you sign the reading record book when they have completed a book at home with you.

Miss Porter will check reading books on a Monday and I will do so on a Friday.

Miss Porter and I will each half term continue to assess all the children’s reading using our benchmarking system. Please bear with us as it does take time but is a thorough assessment of the level the children are reading at. We will also check phonic and word recognition skills on a regular basis.

Further information about this half term’s takeaway homework to follow.  Please continue with learning spellings from the list given at the start of term and learning times tables.
