Week Beginning 23rd April 2018

Wow! What lovely sunny days we have had at the end of April. As I’m writing this though there are a few spots of rain appearing on the window.

In English we have started our new text What Made Tiddalik Laugh, a dreamtime story from Australia.

As Mathematicians we are now moving on to Geometry – Properties of Shapes. At Y2 pupils are expected to

  • identify and describe the properties of 2-D shapes, including the number of sides and line symmetry in a vertical line
  • identify and describe the properties of 3-D shapes, including the number of edges, vertices and faces
  • identify 2-D shapes on the surface of 3-D shapes, [for example, a circle on a cylinder and a triangle on a pyramid]
  • compare and sort common 2-D and 3-D shapes and everyday objects.

As Scientists we will are continuing to investigate how humans and other animals are born, grow and change, and what we need to survive and be healthy. We will be linking this to the animals in our English text.

As Artists and Designers we have started to use our English text as inspiration for our artwork. We have been looking at the colours used in the story and the way the illustrator has used lines in the drawings.

Our handwriting focus for the term is as follows:

  • Week 2 23rd April – r group letters r n m h k p b
  • Week 3 30th April – l group letters l t I u y i
  • Week 4 7th May – tall letters d h b l k t
  • Week 5 14th May - letters with tails f g y I p qu
  • Week 6 21st May- letters that join at the top/others o v w e x z

In phonics/spelling this week’s focus is on learning to spell and understand the words with the endings le and el. We are also as usual continuing to reinforce Long Vowel words, learning to use a GPC and spelling common exception word

In RE our units of work are based around the Christian Concepts: Discipleship, Holy Spirit and Creation.
The key questions are:

  • Discipleship - Why do Christians make promises at baptism?
  • Holy Spirit - What do Christian symbols teach about the Holy Spirit?
  • Creation - Why do Christians look after their local environment? Why do Christians say thank you at harvest time?

Reading
The children are welcome to change their reading book as often as they like but I would ask that you sign the reading record book when they have completed a book at home with you.

Miss Porter and I will as usual continue to assess all the children’s reading again using our benchmarking system. Please bear with us as it does take time but is a thorough assessment of the level the children are reading at.

We have a reading session every day in Y2. The children rotate around different activities provided to support and develop their skills. This includes reading comprehension work both independently and with Miss Porter or myself. It also includes Ipad and computer activities linking with spelling, reading and SPaG. This is alongside 1-1 reading where needed with us.

PE
Our PE days are now Monday pm and Friday am. Mr. Dooley, our PE specialist teacher, will teach both these sessions.
