Week Beginning  22nd October 2018

The last week of this half term already. This week is takeaway homework week. We will be sharing with each other in Y2 and the rest of the school on Wednesday. Parents’ Evenings are also on Tuesday and Thursday.

There is still an unnamed blazer in the classroom. If it belongs to you please let me know or collect it from me on parents’ evening.

InEnglishwe are now using Walter Tull’s Scrapbook as part of our We Will Remember project. This book tells Walter’s remarkable story from his childhood in an orphanage, to his professional football career, through to his death during the First World War.  It is an amazing story and one I didn’t know despite studying the period up to degree level. We have been finding about Walter’s early life.

InMathematicswe are still working on Addition and Subtraction. In Y2 children are expected to

  • solve problems with addition and subtraction:
    • using concrete objects and pictorial representations, including those involving numbers, quantities and measures
    • applying their increasing knowledge of mental and written methods
  • recall and use addition and subtraction facts to 20 fluently, and derive and use related facts up to 100
  • add and subtract numbers using concrete objects, pictorial representations, and mentally, including:
    • two-digit number and ones
    • two-digit number and tens
    • two two-digit numbers
    • adding three one-digit numbers
  • show that addition of two numbers can be done in any order (commutative) and subtraction of one number from another cannot
  • recognise and use the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction and use this to check calculations and solve missing number problems.

As part of our daily maths fluency sessions we have started learning times tables. We love using Numberjacks Times Tables Songs

This week our focus is on the 5x table.

Here is song for the ten times table recommended by Y3

Laughalongandlearn

Ourhandwritingfocus is on the following letters – the c group of letters – c o a d g q s

Inphonics/spellingthe focus is Homophones, using a GPC (grapheme phoneme correspondence) chart and other strategies for learning tricky words. We are also revising the long vowel phonemes ‘ow/ou and learning the different graphemes that can be used to make this sound.

In REour unit of work is called Good News. The key questions of the unit are - How does the bible show Jesus living his life as good news to people? How do you know when you feel better? On the outside? On the inside.

Y2 PEdays are Thursday and Friday mornings with Mr Dooley.

Y2 Reading Books
Y2 are welcome to change their reading book daily but I would ask that you sign the reading record book when they have completed a book at home with you.

Miss Porter will check reading books on a Monday and I will do so on a Friday.

Miss Porter and I will each half term continue to assess all the children’s reading using our benchmarking system. Please bear with us as it does take time but is a thorough assessment of the level the children are reading at. We will also check phonic and word recognition skills on a regular basis.

Homework
Takeaway homework sharing day is Wednesday 24th October. Remember to try and bring in a photo of your 101 Challenges for Miss Cork’s corridor display. Tweet to @bunburyace using #bunburys101challenges.
