Week Beginning 17thSeptember 2018

In English we have started to use the text Wilfred Gordon McDonald Partridge. It is one of my all time favourite books and is written by Mem Fox.  We have been using it to learn about nouns and adjectivex. We have been writing noun phrases and using them in a character description about WGMP.

You can find out more about the author here.  https://memfox.com

In Mathematics the focus for the next few weeks is Place Value. In Y2 children are expected to

  • count in steps of 2, 3, and 5 from 0, and in tens from any number, forward and backward
  • recognise the place value of each digit in a two-digit number (tens, ones)
  • identify, represent and estimate numbers using different representations, including the number line
  • compare and order numbers from 0 up to 100; use <, > and = signs
  • read and write numbers to at least 100 in numerals and in words
  • use place value and number facts to solve problems.

If you have started to learn your times tables there is a great resource at Numberjacks Times Tables Songs

Our handwriting focus is on the following letters – l group of letters l t i u y

In phonics/spelling the focus is Homophones, using a GPC (grapheme phoneme correspondence) chart and other strategies for learning tricky words. We are also revising long vowel phonemes.

In RE our unit of work is called Good News. The key questions of the unit are - How does the bible show Jesus living his life as good news to people? How do you know when you feel better? On the outside? On the inside.

Y2 PE days are Thursday and Friday mornings with Mr Dooley.

Y2 Reading Books
Y2 are welcome to change their reading book daily but I would ask that you sign the reading record book when they have completed a book at home with you.

Miss Porter will check reading books on a Monday and I will do so on a Friday.

Miss Porter and I will each half term continue to assess all the children’s reading using our benchmarking system. Please bear with us as it does take time but is a thorough assessment of the level the children are reading at. We will also check phonic and word recognition skills on a regular basis.

Homework
Homework books came home last Friday with all the information needed stuck inside them.
Takeaway homework sharing day is Wednesday 24th October.
