Date: 15th Apr 2018 @ 4:35pm

Week Beginning 16th April 2018

I hope you have all had a lovely Easter break. I spent a lot of time catching up with family and friends. During the holiday my Grandmother was 98 so we celebrated with an afternoon tea party. We were joined by her sister, my Great Aunty who is 93. Both of them still live in their own homes.

This term we are embracing another whole school project – “Where Would We Be Without Water?”. Look out for the topic overview on our class page, which I will post after discussing the learning with the children. This week I will also talk with the children about Takeaway Homework, which we always plan together.

In English we will be starting a new text with a theme of Water. I won’t say too much about it yet as I would like to introduce it to the children first.

As Mathematicians we are continuing to look at Fractions. At Y2 pupils are expected to

  • recognise, find, name and write fractions 1/3 , 1/4 , 2/3 and 3/4 of a length, shape, set of objects or quantity

  • write simple fractions for example, 21 of 6 = 3 and recognise the equivalence of 2/4 and 1/2 .

As Scientists we will are continuing to investigate how humans and other animals are born, grow and change, and what we need to survive and be healthy. We will linking this to the animals in our English text.

Our handwriting focus for the term is as follows:

  • Week 1 16th April - c group letters c o a d g qu s
  • Week 2 23rd April – r group letters r n m h k p b
  • Week 3 30th April – l group letters l t I u y i
  • Week 4 7th May – tall letters d h b l k t
  • Week 5 14th May - letters with tails f g y I p qu
  • Week 6 21st May- letters that join at the top/others o v w e x z

In phonics/spelling this week’s focus is on learning to spell and understand the words with the endings le and el. We are also as usual continuing to reinforce Long Vowel words, learning to use a GPC and spelling common exception words.

In RE our units of work are based around the Christian Concepts: Discipleship, Holy Spirit and Creation.
The key questions are:

  • Discipleship - Why do Christians make promises at baptism?
  • Holy Spirit - What do Christian symbols teach about the Holy Spirit?
  • Creation - Why do Christians look after their local environment? Why do Christians say thank you at harvest time?

Reading Books
The children are welcome to change their reading book as often as they like but I would ask that you sign the reading record book when they have completed a book at home with you.

Miss Porter and I will as usual continue to assess all the children’s reading again using our benchmarking system. Please bear with us as it does take time but is a thorough assessment of the level the children are reading at.

Our PE days are now Monday pm and Friday am. Mr. Dooley, our PE specialist teacher, will teach both these sessions.
