Week Beginning 16th January 2017

In English this week we are starting a unit of work based around Jack and The Beanstalk using both the traditional version and a modern alternative. This week we will be working on word classes, using nouns and adjectives in expanded noun sentences. We will focus on writing sentences (statement and questions), character comparisons and retelling stories, orally, using story maps and in writing.

In Mathematics we are working on money as part of the Measurement section of the National Curriculum. Through this we will revise place value, counting, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division skills. At Y2 pupils are taught to

  • recognise and use symbols for pounds (£) and pence (p); combine amounts to make a particular value
  • find different combinations of coins that equal the same amounts of money
  • solve simple problems in a practical context involving addition and subtraction of money of the same unit, including giving change

Theme
All our work this term will be based around the theme Home Sweet Home. I will post a curriculum map on our class website and send out Takeaway Homework asap.

In phonics/spelling the focus is the /r/ sound spelt ‘wr’ and common exception words. We continue in all lessons to develop and reinforce the use of different spelling strategies.

Our handwriting focus is on the following letters – l group of letters l t I u y j

In RE our new unit of work is on the Christian Concept: Kingdom of God with the theme of Jesus’ Teaching. The key question will be Why did Jesus teach his disciples to pray in the Lord’s Prayer; ‘Your Kingdom Come?’

Our PE days are Monday (first lesson) and Wednesday (last lesson).

Reading Books
The children are welcome to change their reading book as often as they like but I would ask that you sign the reading record book when they have read to you or to themselves at home.
