Week Beginning 10th September 2018

I hope you all had a good summer. It was lovely to see everyone last week looking very smart in their uniforms. Everyone has settled into the routine of Y2 brilliantly. Already there is an autumn feel to the air in the mornings. Some of the trees round and about where I live in Nantwich are already starting to change colour. This September it is 30 years since I started my PGCE teaching course at college in Bangor, North Wales and my first teaching practice in Colwyn Bay. How times flies!

Each week I will try and post an outline of some of the things we are learning about. Sometimes these change in the week as our interests develop. As you know our whole school focus is titled ‘We Will Remember’. In Y2 we are focusing this around the theme of Memories.

InEnglishwe are using a variety of texts themed around Memories. I will write more next week when I have introduced the first book.

InMathematicsthe focus for the next few weeks is Place Value. In Y2 children are expected to

  • count in steps of 2, 3, and 5 from 0, and in tens from any number, forward and backward
  • recognise the place value of each digit in a two-digit number (tens, ones)
  • identify, represent and estimate numbers using different representations, including the number line
  • compare and order numbers from 0 up to 100; use <, > and = signs
  • read and write numbers to at least 100 in numerals and in words
  • use place value and number facts to solve problems.

Ourhandwritingfocus is on the following letters – c group of letters c o a d g qu s.

Inphonics/spellingthe focus is Homophones, using a GPC (grapheme phoneme correspondence) chart and other strategies for learning tricky words.

In REour unit of work is called Good News. The key questions of the unit are - How does the bible show Jesus living his life as good news to people? How do you know when you feel better? On the outside? On the inside.

Y2 PEdays are Thursday and Friday mornings with Mr Dooley.

Y2 Reading Books
Y2 are welcome to change their reading book daily but I would ask that you sign the reading record book when they have completed a book at home with you.

Miss Porter will check reading books on a Monday and I will do so on a Friday.

Miss Porter and I will each half term continue to assess all the children’s reading using our benchmarking system. Please bear with us as it does take time but is a thorough assessment of the level the children are reading at. We will also check phonic and word recognition skills on a regular basis.

Homework
Homework books will come home next Friday with all the information needed stuck inside them.
