reception News week beginning 30 1 17

Date: 29th Jan 2017 @ 3:32pm

The children did so well last week. We all worked really hard and finished lots of activities. We have introduced the system of "challenges" to the children. If the children are not working with an adult in the mornings they are expected to completete a challenge. Last week one of the challenges was to try to write numbers to 20 looking at a number line. If they complete the challenge they are given a wooden lolly stick. They also have sticks if we see them working really well in the classroom on an independant activity. On a Thursday we total the sticks up to see who has challenged themselves and then they put stickers on their reward chart. Everyone had at least 1 sticker  so the class have made   a really good start. I tick off the children as they do the challenge so I can see who hasn't done it! The children seemed to really enjoy it and were very motivated.

On Monday we have a "BIg Write" on the story "Lost and Found."  The children will be attempting a narrative. It has been a lovely book there is so much in it. The DVD narrated by Jim Broadbent is brilliant. We will then be thinking about what we would put in a suitcase to go to the Arctic. This is going to link into the story The Great Exporer by Chris Judge. We are going to have a doctors kit in the roleplay area and a rescue helicopter on the small roleplay table.

There will be ice melting and fake snow and painting pictures from Lost and found.

It's shape space and measure this week. We will be making igloos with blocks, symmetry pictures on mirrors and making and shape pictures . On the rice and water table we will be looking at capacity. Mrs Lawford will be focussing on ordering numbers in all sorts of different ways. I would be very grateful if the children could go onto the Matheletics website. Some children do, but there are a lot who don't. It would really help those who don't go on with their number. It does need an adult to work with them.
