Year 5

Home learning Summer Term.

As you will be aware school re-opens to a small number of year groups from 1st June 2020. Unfortunately, we are not in a position to accept all children back just yet.

As a result we have altered our approach to home learning to bring it more in line with what those will be doing in school. We hope that this will ensure those who remain at home are not missing out on the structure and learning packed into a school day as much as we possibly can. At the bottom of this webpage you will now find a weekly work plan which will be similar to what the children back in school are covering.

Until now our approach for home learning has not been about ensuring that work given will keep children in line with each other. Nor about intense coverage of the curriculum as I know that this would not have been possible due to the different situations we are all in. We have provided work so that children could keep that love of learning alive in the core areas of learning for the past 7 weeks, in whatever style you as parents decided to take.

What is important is that you as parents have made your children feel safe and secure during this very uncertain time for them and whatever you have done with them will have been perfect.

Hello Year 5!

During the summer term our new topic is based on the book 'What a Waste' which looks at what we can do to help protect our planet from the rubbish we create.

What A Waste by Jess French | Waterstones

It is not only the Earth's land and the sea that we need to protect for future generations. Did you know that Space debris (space waste) is becoming a major problem too?

An astronaut works on a space station and loses a tool. An ageing satellite begins to break up. A panel is knocked off a rocket... space is littered with junk and the problem is getting worse!

During this term, we are going to explore all aspects of space while looking particularly at the impact humans are having in the skies above us as well as the land, oceans and seas around us.

Choose from the list of takeaway homework projects below to explore this exciting topic further!

Purple Mash

Please log on to Purple Mash to find activities I have set related to our new topic. A new one will be added each week. Well done to all of you who have already visited and tried some of the tasks. Use the websites I have recommended to help you research Space.

Year 5 have put all of the login details for the following websites in the back of their Reading Diaries.

Reading

Daily reading is one of the most important things you can do to continue your learning at home. The following website contains a selection of free eBooks, audiobooks and games:

www.oxfordowl.co.uk

You will have received your login details via the office.

Maths

White Rose Maths has created daily lessons which you can complete at home. From the week beginning 11.5.20, these resources (worksheets, answers and video links) will be uploaded to the tab at the bottom of this webpage.

P.S. ENJOY!
White Rose Maths is all about helping learners to love maths by understanding what it’s all about!

Mathletics

Maths activities will be added weekly. The first activities for decimals will be added at the end of the first week studying decimals using White Rose Maths lessons.

Times Table Rock stars

Please practice your times tables regularly. 10-15 minutes per day will keep them fresh in your mind. Don’t forget to practice the corresponding division facts too.

They have added Dance, Yoga, Hand/Eye Coordination skills and personal challenges. The content of this will be updated daily over the coming weeks and I hope the resources available will help you stay active during the closure. The website also provides external links to other websites that might prove useful to parents and carers whilst at home. Please click on the link below to access this content.
