PSHE incorporating RSHE

At Bunbury Aldersey CE Primary we aspire to teach pupils to live their lives well. PSHE in school develops the knowledge, understanding and skills young people need to manage their lives, now and in the future.

At Bunbury Aldersey Church of England Primary School we see PSHE as being at the centre of all that we do. PSHE education is an important and necessary part of all pupils’ education. The promotion of pupils’ personal development (which includes their social development) is a fundamental aspect of education and underpins all other learning. Through our curriculum, our school environment and our school ethos, we promote pupils’ self-esteem and emotional well-being and help them to form and maintain worthwhile and satisfying relationships, based on respect for themselves and for others, at home, at school, at work and in the community.

We believe that developing a sense of self-worth is of paramount importance. When he was on earth, Jesus once said: ‘I am the light of the world’ (John 8:12). However, as he spoke to those around him during the Sermon on the Mount, he also used these words: ‘You are the light of the world’. In addition to letting their light shine on others, we want our children to recognise the value of their own light: to be proud of their personal achievements; to value and respect themselves; and to know how loved they are both by God and by others. We aim to develop a Growth Mindset so that the members of our school are able to face the future with hope and aspiration and embrace all that life has to offer.

Within this curriculum, pupils are taught through three underlying core themes, within which there is broad overlap and flexibility:-

1. Health and Wellbeing
2. Relationships
3. Living in the Wider World

Within these three core themes pupils visit, investigate and learn about separate units, based upon the following areas:-

• Healthy Lifestyles
• Hygiene
• Changing and Growing
• Emotions
• Keeping Safe
• Communication
• Bullying
• Fairness
• Family and Friends
• Rules and Responsibilities
• Communities
• Money and Finance
• Nutrition and Food
• Aspirations
• First Aid
• Collaboration
• Similarities and Differences
• Healthy Relationships
• Diversity
• Discrimination
• Enterprise

We use a number of programmes to support out PSHE curriculum: Kiva, No Outsiders, Christopher Winters Project, Heartsmart and our work as a Rights Respecting Silver award school.
