Reception 2018 - 2019

Mrs Hunt

Welcome back!  We are looking forward to the spring term and excited to explore our Jungle Animals and Their Habitats topic,

We have chosen ten texts to work on with the children, all with an animal or jungle theme.  During the first few weeks of our topic we will be thinking about the types of animals that live in jungle homes, and what life in the jungle is like.  We have also arranged a visit from some RAINFOREST CREATURES to make the topic come to life.

The children will be jungle explorers in the wooded area at school, and also in our role play explorers lodge.  We will be busy writing lists of the animals we find, and labelling the parts of different animals.  We will use simple non-fiction texts to find out important information and use this to write our own animal fact cards.  In maths we will be counting animals, and measuring them to find out which are the tallest or the longest.

The children will be looking at the work of the artist Henri Rousseau, and creating their own jungle art using ICT and collage materials.  As scientists, we will think about where different animals can be found in the jungle, and why they choose these special places.  We will talk about camouflage, and why this is important for the animals.  After half term we will think about endangered animals, why they are endangered, and what we can do to help them.

Alongside our new topic, we will still have our daily phonics lessons, following the Read Write Inc. Scheme.
