Week Beginning 2nd October 2017

I can’t quite believe October is here already. I’m not in school on Monday so Mrs King will be looking after Y2. I am out on a training course with Mrs Todd and Mrs Cliffe.

Don’t forget is Harvest Service at Church on Friday morning at 10.00am All welcome.

Homework – I have posted the Takeaway homework on the class webpage. I will send a paper copy home this week in the children’s homework book, which we also have in their spellings. For mathematics homework please use Mathletics. If you haven’t access to a computer at home let me know and I will arrange some extra lunchtime sessions for your child. We try to use Mathletics at school too in class at least once a week.

In English we are continuing using Peter and The Wolf for our work. We are continuing to learn about using different kinds of sentences in writing. This week we will be looking at commands and then using them in instruction writing. Mrs King in her cover lessons has been using a story called Mr Wolf’s Pancakes. There are many stories with wolves as character sand it is interesting to compare them and see how the character are represented.

In Mathematics the focus for the next few weeks is Place Value. In Y2 children are expected to

  • count in steps of 2, 3, and 5 from 0, and in tens from any number, forward and backward
  • recognise the place value of each digit in a two-digit number (tens, ones)
  • identify, represent and estimate numbers using different representations, including the number line
  • compare and order numbers from 0 up to 100; use <, > and = signs
  • read and write numbers to at least 100 in numerals and in words
  • use place value and number facts to solve problems.

This week’s main focus is in ordering numbers and representing numbers on a number line.

In our theme/topic work we are continuing to investigate ‘Where is Russia?’ Artwork using the architecture of St Basil’s Cathedral in Red Square as inspiration for our drawings and painting is continuing as we start to build our models.

Our handwriting focus is on the following letters – tall group of letters d h b l k t

In phonics/spelling the focus is Long Vowel Homophones, using a GPC (grapheme phoneme correspondence) chart and other strategies for learning tricky words.

In RE our unit of work is called Good News. The key questions of the unit are - How does the bible show Jesus living his life as good news to people? How do you know when you feel better? On the outside? On the inside.

Our PE days are Monday am (Ms Charlesworth) and Wednesday am (Sports’ Coaches)
