Week Beginning 23rd January 2017

I will not be in school on Tuesday this week. Mrs King will be with Y2.
Please find the takeaway homework on the Y2 class webpage. I will also put a paper copy inside homework books.

In English this week we are continuing our unit of work based around Jack and The Beanstalk and a modern making predictions and discussing new vocabulary. In all these activities we will be writing and focusing on sentence types, consistent use of punctuation and presentation skills.

In Mathematics we will finish our unit on money, which is part of the Measurement section of the National Curriculum. We will be using place value, counting, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division skills. At Y2 pupils are taught to

  • recognise and use symbols for pounds (£) and pence (p); combine amounts to make a particular value
  • find different combinations of coins that equal the same amounts of money
  • solve simple problems in a practical context involving addition and subtraction of money of the same unit, including giving change

We will be thinking about ‘What a wonderful world we live in’ from a geographical perspective. In art we will looking at city landscapes and using ideas from our English text to develop work.

In phonics/spelling the focus is the ‘o’ sound spelt ‘after ‘w’ and ‘qu’ e.g. want, quality. We continue in all lessons to develop and reinforce the use of different spelling strategies.

Our handwriting focus is on the following letters – r group of letters r n m h k p b

In RE our new unit of work is on the Christian Concept: Kingdom of God with the theme of Jesus’ Teaching. The key question will be Why did Jesus teach his disciples to pray the Lord’s Prayer; ‘Your Kingdom Come?’

Our PE days are Monday (first lesson) and Wednesday (last lesson).

The children are welcome to change their reading book as often as they like but I would ask that you sign the reading record book when they have read to you or to themselves at home. We change books everyday just before lunch.
