Date: 12th Nov 2017 @ 3:41pm

Week Beginning 13th November 2017

I’m writing this having just come back from the Remembrance Parade in Nantwich. Although there was a cold wind town was full of people paying their respects.

In English we are continuing with non-fiction writing. Our focus is report writing about Wolves.

In Mathematics the focus for the next half term is addition and subtraction. In Y2 children are expected to

  • solve problems with addition and subtraction:
    • using concrete objects and pictorial representations, including those involving numbers, quantities and measures
    • applying their increasing knowledge of mental and written methods
  • recall and use addition and subtraction facts to 20 fluently, and derive and use related facts up to 100
  • add and subtract numbers using concrete objects, pictorial representations, and mentally, including:
    • two-digit number and ones
    • two-digit number and tens
    • two two-digit numbers
    • adding three one-digit numbers
  • show that addition of two numbers can be done in any order (commutative) and subtraction of one number from another cannot
  • recognise and use the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction and use this to check calculations and solve missing number problems.

This week the focus is adding tens numbers e.g. 21+30, 60+50 , moving on to addition of 2 digit and 1 digit numbers eg. 54+3, 78+6

In our topic work we will be continuing work on Russia.

Our handwriting focus is on the following letters – the l group of letter – l t i u j y

In phonics/spelling the focus is Long Vowel Homophones, using a GPC (grapheme phoneme correspondence) chart and other strategies for learning tricky words. The focus this week is the different spellings for the ‘air sound.

In RE our unit of work is called Belonging To A Church. The key question of the unit is - How do we know someone belongs to a Christian Community? Nearer to Christmas Y2 also look at a unit of work called ‘Kingdom of God’ and the concept incarnation. The key questions of this unit are – What does the visit of the Magi tell Christians about Jesus?, Why is Jesus considered a King by Christians?

Our PE days are Monday am (Ms Charlesworth) and Wednesday am (Sports’ Coaches)

Reading Books
The children are welcome to change their reading book as often as they like but I would ask that you sign the reading record book when they have completed a book.

Homework – For mathematics homework please use Mathletics. If you haven’t access to a computer at home let me know and I will arrange some extra lunchtime sessions for your child. We try to use Mathletics at school too in class at least once a week.
Please send homework books in on a Monday. I will try to mark the spellings and return the books with new spelling homework on a Tuesday.
